about
The Resistance
By Thana Alexa
Spoken Word by Staceyann Chin
After attending the Women’s March in Washington D.C. in January 2017 I was inspired to start writing the music for this album. This was the first song that came out of that experience. I had never felt so motivated to express my right to resist, to protest, to be heard and to support a positive movement of change.
lyrics
Can’t take my freedom
Away
Using my fear and pain
Won’t sway
My mind from my integrity
Won’t agree when only some
Are free
Will not stay silent
Today
Change is born from the ones
Who say
Injustice will not be our law
Resistance now is our duty
Rise up (6X)
Knowledge is power
To gain
Admitting ignorance
Is king
Integrate grief into healing, don’t give up now
Silence is surrender
So, speak!
Be wise, but be wild
Evil only seeks to divide
We must rise, outsize
Revolutionize our minds
To unify
Detoxify
Not turn a blind eye
While they vilify
Our rights
Our cries
Change can only come with time
(Spoken word)
We have to find the fortitude to keep
Rising up
For them, for ourselves
For our children, for our children’s children
It’s time to raise more than our eyebrows in protest
It’s time to put our bodies where we say our politics lie
This is not a moment to evoke the
Sweet by and by
THIS is a moment for
Civil disobedience
If there is any humanity left in you
Get up!
Get up, I say stand up!
Stand up, I say sit in!
Write, you have to scream
Wail, you have to march
Pull down that racist fucking flag
We have to plan
We have to scheme
We have to plot our way forward
We have to strategize!
If you rise up
Be the voice of
The change that you want
Now starts the resistance
When you rise up
Don’t let self-doubt
Turn to self-sabotage
We The People
Will restore
Free body
Free mind
Free words
Our time
Not fine
With liberty and justice only for some
So be wild, but be wise
Evil only seeks to divide
We must rise, outside
Revolutionize our minds (2X)
Only the dead can see the end
Why can’t we learn from our mistakes
Of our bloodshed
Divide and conquer
This is their plan

Rise up before they shoot us down
No building walls between our friends
Mind your own uterus, my man

A story of sadness, confusion, and despair ending in hope and certainty that the cosmos is not a random and meaningless jumble of atoms populated by mindless mechanical men, but a world of meaning, beauty, and truth. Emotions and the heart are not everything, but they are an essential part of being human. ianjworsomething
