about

You Taught Me
By Thana Alexa

There are very strong women in my life who have helped me grow into the person that I am, but my father is the male figure who showed me what it means for a man to truly respect a woman, her mind, her life and her work. My dad and I have seen tragedy, loss and heartbreak in our family life and we’ve learned a lot from each other in the process – something that will connect us forever. In recent years we’ve disagreed about many things, which has caused strain on our relationship, but I’ve recognized the fact that I am able to speak my mind and feel confident in my own opinions even when disagreeing with him because of how he helped raise me and how he taught me to defend myself and my ideas.

lyrics

You were never second best
Just like me waiting your turn
Not complaining, complicating
My Life
Protected by your hands
Though at times I know your worth
Seemed underrated, unappreciated
Always the quiet one
But you showed me the power of words
To use the good ones or just use none
And that the day at hand
Embraces evils enough to command
More than what tomorrow plans

Nobody knows the trouble we’ve seen
Or when the struggle was doubled
And in those times when it’s been hard to see
And a part of me has crumbled

You told me to fight for love
Look up to the sky for love
Our world can be unjust
This life can make you feel crushed
Just remember that you are enough

I lost a sense of me
Hit with quick responsibility
I know it was hard to understand
Apprehension and contention
Added a third dimension
To the way you gave me my protection

A problem no longer yours to think of
But Home is with us for life
At times when I looked around
To see if I was safe and sound
I saw your face
Even though I could feel your pain

Nobody knows the trouble we’ve seen
Or when that struggle was doubled
And in those times when it’s been hard to see
And a part of me has crumbled

You told me to fight for love
Look up to the sky for love
Our world can be unjust
This life can make you feel crushed
Just remember that you are enough

Life’s lessons, they are cold
Daily tested based on our principles
You came with all information
I used to inform and support my own opinions

Comes a moment when we don’t
Fully agree
It is not a rebellion
Just a growth of character within me

You always told me to be true
To speak with intent
To never lose sight of who I am
Be an example people look to

Even if I’ve
Viewed things in a light
That’s different from how you felt
You taught me never to sacrifice my right
In what I believe, not be passive

You taught me to fight (you taught me to fight)
Don’t let go of your might (don’t let go of your might)
Look up to the sky (look up to the sky)
Our world can be unjust (you’ll always be enough)
But you are enough

You taught me to fight for love
Look up to the sky for love
Our world can be unjust
This life can make you feel crushed
Just remember that you are enough
